Dilated Cervix
A dilated cervix from previous procedures could lead to miscarriage, but doesn't effect the vulvar area.
During the procedure the physitian enlarges the cervix and scrapes the inside of the uterus to remove tissue for analysis. "D&C" is conducted if a Pap smear test doesn't clearly indicate whether abnormalities are caused by problem in the cervix or in the endometrium.

In general it is a very safe procedure and has been performed for many years. After it complications are possible: bleeding or (in rare cases) perforation of the uterus. The procedure can be performed in the office with or without anesthesia. A dilated cervix from previous procedures could lead to miscarriage, but doesn't effect the vulvar area.
