When the abnormal tissue has been identified, it may be necessary to take a sample from the affected area for further analysis. After these operations light bleeding, dark discharge, and pain are possible for a day or two. Doctors advise not to have sex for about a week.

Colposcopies confirm the negative Pap smears and identify the exact position of the abnormal cells. The examination helps to determine the best method for treatment. In some cases the treatment (LEEP) is performed during the same visit to the doctor.
